วันนี้มาพูดถึงเรื่อง Participial phrases กันนะคะ
ก่อนอื่นขอย้อนความก่อนว่า sentence-combining methods มีทั้งหมด 5 วิธีคือ
1. Insert adj/adv/prep phrases
2. Appositives
3. Coordination
4. Subordination
5. Participial phrases
วันนี้จะคุยถึงข้อที่ 5 โดยเริ่มจากทำความรู้จักกับ Participles ซึ่งก็คือ verb form ต่างๆที่ใช้เป็น adj ได้
Participial phrases ก็คือ phrase ที่ขึ้นต้นด้วย present participle (V-ing) หรือ past participle (V -3) นั่นเองค่ะ
โดยจะมีอยู่สอง tenses ด้วยกันคือ
Present participle – noun ทำกริยานั้นเอง
Past participle – noun ถูกกระทำ
Present participle – noun ทำกริยานั้นเอง ประโยคตัวอย่างเช่น..
“Asking for a raise, John found out about his boss’s temper.”
Participle ขยาย John เป็นผู้กระทำ เลยใช้ present participle Participle ขยาย John ซึ่งเป็น subj
ถ้าเป็นในอดีตหล่ะ Past participle – noun ถูกกระทำ
“The colors painted on the wall were white, yellow and blue.”
Participle ขยาย colors เป็นตัวถูกกระทำ เลยใช้ past participle Participle ขยาย colors ซึ่งเป็น subj

ส่วนข้อผิดพลาดที่มักจะพบอยู่บ่อยคือ Dangling modifiers (dangle = ห้อยอยู่หลวมๆ)
โดยจะเป็นการวางผิดตำแหน่ง Misplaced..
เช่น “Carrying a heavy pile of books, her foot caught on the step.”
→ Carrying a heavy pile of books ขยาย foot ซึ่งผิด
วิธีแก้คือให้ใส่คำที่ participial phrase นั้นขยาย..
โดยที่ถูกคือ “Carrying a heavy pile of books, she caught her foot on the step.”
หรือจะเปลี่ยน participial phrase เป็น adverb clause ได้เช่นกันค่ะ
“While she was carrying a heavy pile of books, her foot caught on the steps.”
