Error in Subject-Verb Agreement

Example 1

Improved sonar technology, together with less stringent quotas, (account/accounts) for the recent increase in the amount of fish caught by commercial vessels.

อันนี้ดูเผินๆ อาจจะนึกว่าsubject คือ quotas แต่จริงๆเป็นคำว่า technology ซึ่งเป็น singular 

Correct

Improved sonar technology, together with less stringent quotas, accounts for the recent increase in the amount of fish caught by commercial vessels.

 

Example 2

Grade school instruction in ethical and social values, particularly the values of respect and of tolerance, (is/are) required for any democracy to thrive.

อันนี้ดูเผินๆ อาจจะนึกว่าsubject คือ values  แต่จริงๆเป็นคำว่า instruction ซึ่งเป็น singular 

Correct

Grade school instruction in ethical and social values, particularly the values of respect and of tolerance, is required for any democracy to thrive.

 

ตัวอย่างกรณีเป็น compound subject

• ถ้าเชื่อมsubjectsด้วย ‘and’ –>  ถือว่าเป็น plural

Example 3

Raising a child alone and holding down a full-time job (requires/require) good organizational skills.  

อันนี้ประธานมีสองอันคือ  Raising a child alone กับ holding down a full-time job ถือเป็น plural

Correct

Raising a child alone and holding down a full-time job require good organizational skills.  

 

• ถ้าใช้  ‘or’, ‘either … or’, ‘neither …. nor’  –> ให้ใช้ verb form ตาม subject ที่อยู่ใกล้ verb ที่สุด

Example 4

Neither his financial patron nor Copernicus himself (was/were) expecting the societal backlash resulting from his denouncing the Earth-centered Ptolemaic model of the universe. 

อันนี้ใช้ neither …. nor  คือแค่อันใดอันหนึ่งเป็นประธาน เลยใช้ singular

Correct

Neither his financial patron nor Copernicus himself was expecting the societal backlash resulting from his denouncing the Earth-centered Ptolemaic model of the universe. 

 

Example 5

Either my teacher or my classmates are singing at the karaoke tonight. 

ใช้  are เพราะกริยาอยู่ใกล้ประธานที่เป็นพูหพจน์

Either my classmates or my teacher is singing at the karaoke tonight. 

ใช้  is เพราะกริยาอยู่ใกล้ประธานที่เป็นเอกพจน์

 

สรุป

• เช็คให้แน่ใจว่าประธานคืออะไรกันแน่ ถ้าไม่แน่ใจให้ลองแตกประโยคเป็นส่วนๆ ดูว่าอะไรเป็น เป็นประธาน แล้วค่อยหา verb แล้วเลือก verb form
• เรื่องนี้มักจะเป็นเรื่องที่ autocorrect ผิดเยอะ เพราะมันมักจะเอาคำนามที่อยู่ใกล้ verb ว่าเป็นประธาน ฉะนั้นเราต้องดูเอง
