VDO lesson วันนี้เรามาคุยกันเรื่อง unclear pronoun reference คือ เกี่ยวกับเวลาที่เราใช้ pronoun เพื่อแทนคำนาม แต่ไม่ชัดว่าใช้แทนคำนามตัวไหนกันแน่ เรื่องนี้แก้กันง่ายๆ ลองมาดูตัวอย่างกันค่ะ
ตัวอย่าง 1
“My grandparents ordered pancakes because they weren’t very hungry.”
อันนี้ they หมายถึง grandparents เพราะว่าเราเข้าใจจาก context อยู่แล้ว (pancakes มันหิวไม่ได้)
“My grandparents like playing cards with their neighbors because they aren’t very competitive.”
อันนี้งงว่า they หมายถึง grandparents หรือ neighbors หรือว่าทุกคนเลย แก้ได้หลายแบบ
“My grandparents like playing cards with their neighbors, who aren’t very competitive.”
อันนี้ความหมายคือ grandparents ไม่ competitive
“My grandparents, who aren’t very competitive, like playing cards with their neighbors, who are also not very competitive.”
อันนี้ความหมายคือ ทุกคนไม่ competitive
ตัวอย่าง 2
“After months of posturing and debate, those planning the expensive new football stadium suspended the project, which students loudly celebrated.”
อันนี้ which หมายถึงอะไรกันแน่ อาจจะหมายถึงว่า students celebrated the suspension of the project หรืออาจจะหมายถึงว่า students celebrated การสร้างstadium เราควรจะเปลี่ยนให้clear กว่านี้
“After months of posturing and debate, those planning the expensive new football stadium suspended the project, and students loudly celebrated the news.”
อันนี้ชัดเจนว่า students celebrated the suspension of the project
ตัวอย่าง 3
“Carl Sagan praised Stephen Hawking after he wrote A Brief History of Time.”
อันนี้ไม่ชัดเจนว่าใครเขียน A Brief History of Time กันแน่ จะหมายถึง Sagan หรือ Hawking ก็ได้
“Carl Sagan praised Stephen Hawking after Hawking wrote A Brief History of Time.”
อันนี้ชัดเจนว่า Hawking เขียน A Brief History of Time
Practice ลองแก้ประโยคต่อไปนี้นะคะ คำตอบอยู่ข้างล่าง
- When the ship struck the dock, it burst into flames.
- Jane called Alice while she was doing her homework.
- The history book was in my bag, but somebody took it.
Answer
1. When it struck the dock, the ship burst into flames. หรือ The dock burst into flames when the ship struck it. อันนี้เป็นตัวอย่างที่ดีว่าเราสามารถแก้ประโยคได้หลายแบบ ขึ้นอยู่กับว่าความหมายที่เราจะสื่อคืออะไรค่ะ
2. While Jane was doing her homework, she called Alice. While Alice was doing her homework, she called Jane.
3. Somebody took the history book that was in my bag.
