การใช้ Tense
เรื่อง tense ที่ต้องคอยระวังใน writing คือ ต้องใช้ tense ที่สื่อความหมายถูกต้อง และให้ต่อเนื่องในแต่ละ paragraph หลายๆครั้งเวลาเรียนที่โรงเรียนเพื่อเตรียมสอบ เรามักจะได้เรียนว่าควรจะใช้ tense เหมือนกันทั้ง paragraph แต่เมื่อเราเขียนระดับสูงขึ้นมา จะเห็นว่าเราต้องเลือก tense ที่สื่อความหมายระหว่างประโยคได้ถูก มันไม่มีกฏตายตัวค่ะ
มาดูตัวอย่างกันค่ะ
ถ้าเหตุการณ์เกิดพร้อมกัน ใช้ tense เดียวกัน
The bell rang, and the classroom emptied.
ถ้าเหตุการณ์เกิดต่างเวลากัน ใช้ tense ต่างกันเพื่อแสดงให้เห็นว่าอะไรเกิดก่อน
I play football now, but I played basketball in middle school.
เพราะว่าตอนนี้เล่น football อยู่ ฉะนั้นต้องใช้ present tense ส่วนการเล่น basketball เป็นอดีตที่ไม่ได้ต่อเนื่องมาถึงปัจจุบัน เพราะฉะนั้นก็ใช้ past tense
Joan mentioned that she had invited some of her neighbors to the party.
เนื่องจากว่า Joan พูดไปแล้วในอดีต เพราะฉะนั้นต้องใช้ past tense ส่วนการเชิญเพื่อนบ้านนั้นเป็นสิ่งที่เธอทำก่อนการพูด จึงต้องใช้ past perfect ค่ะ (past perfect tense ใช้เพื่อบอกว่าเหตุการณ์นี้เกิดก่อนอีกเหตุการณ์หนึ่งที่เกิดขึ้นแล้ว)
บางกรณีใช้ได้มากกว่าหนึ่งแบบ แล้วแต่ความหมายที่เราจะสื่อ (ตอนนี้ไม่ได้สอบ multiple choice แล้ว ต้องเลือกให้ตรงกับความหมายนะคะ)
I believe they own the Catopia Cafe.
ใช้ present tense ทั้งสองอันเพราะทั้งสองเหตุการณ์เกิดขึ้นตอนนี้
I believe they owned the Catopia Cafe.
ส่วนประโยคที่สองนี้ใช้ owned เป็น past tense เพื่อจะสื่อว่าตอนนี้พวกเขาไม่ได้เป็นเจ้าของ Catopia Cafe แล้ว
ต่อไปเป็นตัวอย่างจากเพื่อนใน ชมรม English writing made easy นะคะ
I had ever given a handmade knitting scarf to my English teacher.
I gave a handknit scarf to my English teacher. เพื่อบอกว่าเป็นอดีต ตอนนี้ไม่ได้ทำแล้ว
ประโยคต่ออย่างต่อไปค่ะ
There are two things I like to do on vacation. The first is reading a book. When I went to the department store, I always bought an interesting book. But finally, I didn’t have time to read it. The second is going to the market in the early morning. There is a shop selling delicious soy milk but it opens in the morning only.
อันนี้จะเห็นว่าส่วนแรกที่พูดถึงการอ่านหนังสือเป็นอดีต แต่ส่วนที่สองที่พูดถึงร้านขายน้ำเต้าหู้เป็น present tense ซึ่งอ่านแล้วอาจจะงงว่าพูดถึงเรื่องทั่วๆไป หรือเหตุการณ์เฉพาะเจาะจงที่เกิดขึ้นไปแล้ว
ลองแก้ดูจะได้เป็น
There are two things I like to do on vacation. The first is reading a book. Before going on vacation, I always go to a department store to buy an interesting book. But I usually end up not having the time to read it. The second is going to the market early in the morning because there are several shops that open only in the morning.
